“At the beginning of every new work—and every day of work—is  the unknown”

-Meredith Monk

The method

The Performance Pyramid

The Performance Pyramid is a framework for actor training that describes the natural progression from raw, moment-to-moment aliveness to crafted, repeatable artistry.

  • Level 1 – Chaos / Formlessness / Surrender: Here we cultivate sensitivity and spontaneity. The focus is on yielding to the moment without pre-planning, allowing the unexpected to emerge.

  • Level 2 – Order / Form / Control: Here we shape that raw energy into something precise, structured, and repeatable without losing its life.

  • Performance: The apex of the pyramid — the meeting point where chaos and order coexist, producing work that is both alive and reliable.

5 Principles of Performance

  1. Presence – The state of being fully in the here and now.

  2. Attunement – Deep listening, connection and responsiveness to self, partner, and environment.

  3. Impulse – Trusting and acting upon immediate, instinctive responses.

  4. Articulation – Giving shape and structure to action; turning formless energy into something clear and intentional.

  5. Style – Aligning choices with the world of the piece, genre, or character; refining how the work communicates to an audience.

The Journey of the Artist

The life of an artist is, at its core, a journey into the unknown. It is a deliberate sojourn into chaos, where intuition, instinct, and raw impulse reside — the very elements that cannot be predicted or fully understood.

The artist’s work is to explore that chaos and partially articulate it into order, turning the formless into something perceivable, tangible, and sharable. In doing so, artists teach the world how to see. They take what is hidden, unstable, or unknown and render it accessible through their craft.

This is why the Performance Pyramid is structured the way it is.

Artists, by bridging chaos and order, give the world new perspectives, new experiences, and new ways of understanding. They make the invisible known, and in that act, they perform one of the most vital functions of human culture.

Private Voice Lessons with Riley Neldam

BESPOKE PRIVATE COACHING FOR YOUR SPECIFIC VOICE AND PERFORMANCE GOALS

can include aNY COMBINATION of the following AREAS from Riley’s Repertoire:

1. Voice for Actors
Drawing on Kristin Linklater’s Freeing the Natural Voice and Jean-René Toussaint’s Primitive Voice, this training works to release the voice from physical and mental blocks and reconnect it to breath, body, and imagination. Through vibration, movement, and embodied exploration, students develop a voice that is resonant, confident, and powerfully expressive. The work expands vocal range and strength, increases clarity and resonance, and builds the technical capacity to move effortlessly between delicate intimacy and full-throated extremes such as shouting, growling, or wailing. The result is a voice that is uninhibited and versatile, capable of meeting the demands of stage or screen with presence, impact, and authenticity.

2. Extreme Vocals / Scream Technique
This offering unlocks the voice’s primal power through safe, sustainable techniques for extreme expression. Students learn to access growls, shouts, screams, wails, and other heightened sounds without strain, building the stamina required to repeat them consistently in performance. The work increases vocal resilience, expands expressive range, and equips actors, singers, and voice-over artists with the ability to channel raw intensity while protecting the instrument. Whether you are a heavy metal vocalist, a classical actor tackling outdoor theatre, or a performer preparing for high-energy voice-over work, these tools allow you to meet demanding vocal challenges with confidence and control.

3. Career Coaching
Success in this industry requires more than craft — it demands a clear understanding of the business of acting. These sessions are designed to demystify the industry and give you the tools to navigate it with confidence. Together, we’ll identify your unique selling point — the qualities that make you stand out — and translate that into a strategy for finding the right roles, signing with a good agent, and building strong professional relationships. We’ll also look closely at your materials and audition portfolio, sharpening them so they reflect your strengths and marketability. Each session is practical, tailored, and focused on helping you determine the specific steps that will carry you into the next major phase of your career with clarity and purpose.

4. Self-Tape & Audition Coaching
Focused support to help you bring your best work into the audition room or onto camera. Sessions cover text analysis, performance choices, and technical details of self-taping — including framing, lighting, and sound — so that your audition is polished, engaging, and memorable. Students learn how to prepare efficiently, adapt quickly under pressure, and deliver performances that capture attention. The goal is not only to book the job, but to build confidence in your ability to consistently present your work at its highest level.

5. Acting Coaching
These one-to-one sessions are designed to help actors move beyond technique alone and fully inhabit the world of the text. Students develop a stronger imaginative and responsive connection to the material, learning to follow impulses, make clear choices, and trust the process of discovery. The work helps get you out of your head and into your body, allowing you to stop “acting” and start simply “being.” You will experience what it is to be fully alive in a scene, letting the text take you on a journey while your responses remain authentic, vibrant, and grounded. The result is a presence that feels natural, immediate, and deeply compelling on stage or screen.

6. Movement & Fitness for Actors
This training addresses a common conundrum in actor preparation: the belief that athletic or strength-based training can interfere with the subtle, tension-free movement demanded by drama school techniques. Through a system designed around the natural patterns of human movement, students develop strength, power, and athletic capacity without compromising the freedom and responsiveness of their acting instrument. The work allows actors to pursue high-level physical performance, build lean or muscular physiques, and enhance overall fitness, while maintaining ease, suppleness, and presence in performance. Students emerge with bodies that are strong, resilient, and fully aligned with the expressive needs of stage and screen.

7. Public Speaking for Non-Actors
For professionals, students, and anyone seeking to speak with greater confidence and impact, this training adapts proven techniques from actor training to the world of presentations and public speaking. Students learn to use breath and body to steady nerves, project with clarity, and hold the attention of a room. Sessions build vocal presence, authority, and ease, while developing practical strategies for structuring talks and engaging audiences. The outcome is a speaker who can command attention, connect authentically, and leave a lasting impression.

8. Classical & Traditional Singing
This training develops the foundational skills of professional singing, focusing on breath control, pitch accuracy, resonance, tone, and range. Students explore technical exercises and repertoire designed to strengthen the voice, increase flexibility and stamina, and improve expressive control. Whether performing on stage, in a studio, or in recital, students emerge with a polished, confident, and versatile singing voice capable of nuanced expression, sustained performance, and commanding presence.

9. Martial Arts for the Camera
Designed for actors pursuing stunt work or action roles, this training teaches the fundamentals of martial arts disciplines — including boxing, Muay Thai kickboxing, and basic grappling — in a way that translates convincingly to the camera. Students learn to move, react, and hold themselves like experienced fighters, creating performances that feel authentic and fluid. The work enhances fitness, resilience, and physical awareness, expands the actor’s expressive range, and develops the ability to tell stories physically on stage or screen while performing dynamic, believable action sequences.

This workshop invites participants to explore the voice as a full-body, sensory, and emotional experience. Rooted in breath, movement, and instinct, it encourages performers to release habitual tension, expand their resonance and vocal range, and reconnect the voice to the spine and to deeper impulses. It’s not about vocal “performance”, but about rediscovering the voice as something primal, raw, and deeply human.
